Grubaugh semi-retired in May 2020 after almost 40 years in K-12 and college classrooms, including more than 25 years of journalism teaching and advising. His last two decades were spent at Granite Bay (Calif.) HS, where he advised the Gazette student newspaper and GraniteBayToday.org student news website. He is a JEA Mentor, and he presents at JEA/NSPA and CSPA conventions. He serves as a writing coach for SacSchoolBeat.com, a scholastic journalism program for underserved students in the Sacramento area, and he conducts social studies and science teacher trainings for a Bay Area educational publisher.
