Grubaugh sem-retired in May 2020 after almost 40 years in K-12 and college classrooms, including more than 25 years of journalism teaching and advising. His last two decades were spent at Granite Bay (Calif.) HS, where he advised the Gazette student newspaper and GraniteBayToday.org student news website. He is a JEA Mentor, and he presents at JEA/NSPA and CSPA conventions. He serves as an adjunct professor at Sacramento State University, where he teaches intro. and advanced newswriting.
