After 15 years as a professional broadcast journalist, Bennewitz entered the teaching profession as an English and journalism teacher at Galesburg (IL) H.S. He previously advised the school newspaper and now advises the school yearbook since 2022. He is a former board member of the Illinois Journalism Education Association.
